Startup

The PlayStation 5 announces itself with a brief chime and the PlayStation logo on boot, much like its predecessors. The video below is a cold boot, which is what you see every time you power the console on from off.

  • The very first time a PS5 is switched on it plays a different and much more elaborate startup animation, one a surprising number of owners never saw, because it happens while they are still busy plugging in cables. Some listeners claim to hear the PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3 and PS4 chimes folded together inside it, although that reading is disputed (PlayStation LifeStyle).

Trivia & Fun Facts

  • If you look closely at the white "wings" (plates) of the console and the back of the DualSense controller, you’ll see a tiny texture. It’s actually composed of thousands of microscopic Square, Triangle, Circle, and Cross symbols. This was a secret detail added by the designers to make the surface "grippy" and uniquely Sony.
  • The DualSense controller replaced standard "rumble" with voice-coil actuators. This allows you to feel the "grittiness" of sand, the pitter-patter of rain, or the tension of a bowstring through the triggers. It’s widely considered the biggest innovation of this generation.
  • The PS5 is officially the largest home games console ever released (in terms of volume). Its "V-shaped" cooling vent at the top is a subtle nod to the Roman numeral for 5 (V).
